Jim Coulter's SUN 78's Collection, (Auction #4) Highlights!

Closes Thursday, October 22, 2024 at 7:00 pm PT

Welcome to an auction of a world class collection of original SUN and SUN label related 78 rpm records. Yes, it is the legendary Jim Coulter collection!

For years, Mr. Coulter aggressively went after SUN,
Meteor and other Memphis related 78's attempting to amass a complete collection. He also collected Blues and other records recorded at SUN, but released by other labels.

Jim put his heart and soul into finding these 78's. If he located one he needed, he was relentless in pursuing it. Jim never obtained all the SUN 78's — I'm actually not sure if anyone has ever — but he got pretty darn close! And to top it off, most of his records are in very good condition.

Now in his 70's, Mr. Coulter has decided to call it good and stop his searching, thus giving others a chance to acquire his treasures, some of which are almost never for sale . . . until now.

SUN and anything related to it brings very spirited bidding as collectors worldwide are constantly trying to complete the label or add their favorites to their collection. Bidder beware — the super rarities should have aggressive bidding and much competition and even the more common items should generate numerous bids.

Because Mr. Coulter has so many high value records, I am splitting up his collection into at least five auctions. The next one will be just after the new year, in January or February. This is YOUR chance to get the "pick of the litter" of an amazing SUN and SUN related collection.

Questions are always welcome and, if possible, request a CALL BACK to give you the best shot at obtaining the records you can't live without! Nothing is being held back so if you don't see what you want in this auction, check out my next one.

Good luck to all bidders!

How to bid on my Monthly Auctions

TOP TEN Rarest SUN 78's!:

1. James Cotton "Cotton Crop Blues / Hold Me In Your Arms" SUN 206 • M- BLUES MASTERPIECE!!! The rarest and best of his two SUN releases. The 45 sells for $5,000.00 or more! The 78 sounds incredible and is not readily available these days. MB $500

2. Jimmy DeBerry "Take A Little Chance / Time Has Made A Change" SUN 185 • VG+ Another SUN Blues masterpiece by a singer that made records in the late 1930's as well. Again, a MINT 45 sells for around $5,000.00 and the 78's are getting much harder to come by! MB $350

3. Charlie Feathers "Peepin' Eyes / I've Been Deceived" FLIP 503 • M- Charlie Feathers classic and it was released on SUN as well as FLIP. (See #27 in this auction for that one!) Gorgeous copy! Multiple thousands of dollars for the 45 and tough on 78 in clean shape. MB $350

4. Hardrock Gunter "Fallen Angel / Gonna Dance All Night" SUN 201 • M- Tough one to find—a Country style (with a hint of Rockabilly) release that comes not long before Elvis would change the whole direction of the label. MB $500

5. Little Junior's Blue Flames "Feelin' Good / Fussin' And Fightin' Blues" SUN 187M- INSANELY RARE WHITE AND BROWN LABEL PROMOTIONAL COPY! Plenty of these around as stock copies, but the PROMO is almost never seen! MB $350

6. Elvis Presley "Baby Let's Play House / I'm Left, You're Right, She's Wrong'" SUN 217 M- Gorgeous copy of Classic ELVIS at SUN sound! The SUN 78's sound far superior to their 45 rpm counterparts and this one just leaps from the grooves. MB $1,000

7. Elvis Presley "Mystery Train / I Forgot To Remember To Forget" SUN 223VG Last of the five Elvis SUN releases and this copy has just a bit of wear from juke-box use . . . but will play great despite that. MB $200

8. Big Memphis Marainey "Call Me Anything, But Call Me / Baby, No, No!" SUN 184M- The star of this show! One of the toughest SUN numbers to acquire. Those running the label, even on 78, will be hard pressed to get this one. The 45 sells for over $12,000 and there are only a few copies known to exist on 45. MB $3,000
